Coastal Navigation for Sea Kayaks for Maine State Sea Kayak (2)
Coastal Navigation for sea kayaks for Maine State Sea Kayak is a private course where the participants will learn the basics of coastal navigation geared for sea kayakers and SUP users. Future Registered Maine Guides for Sea Kayaking and Tide-Water Fishing specialties should take this course.
This is the hands-on portion of the course where you will practice using the tools needed for coastal navigation, learn about charts and how to read them, and begin to see hazards associated with the waterways.
You will learn to plot course bearings using the normal charting tools - parallel ruler and dividers. You will not need to purchase them for class, but if you own them, please bring them. After using the ones provided in the class, you will know what to buy for your personal use. DO BRING YOUR READING GLASSES! Charts have small symbols and subtle color gradations that require good eyesight. Magnifiers will be available.
Tides, moon phases, weather conditions, and other boating uses affecting the coastal waters will be discussed and you will learn how to predict where you should navigate your craft based on those hazards and conditions.
You will be given access to an online course that will serve as your handbook in advance. It is ideal for you to read the materials included in the online course before attending class. You will have access to it after the class meets.
