Coastal Navigation for Small Boats
Coastal Navigation for Small Boats is a two session - 1.75 hours each session, course where you will learn the basics of coastal navigation geared for sea kayakers, SUP users, and small motorboat users. Future Registered Maine Guides for Sea Kayaking and Tide-Water Fishing specialties should take this course.
Although this is a remote/distance learning two session course, this is the hands-on portion of the course where you will practice using the tools needed for coastal navigation, learn about charts and how to read them, and begin to see hazards associated with the waterways.
You will learn to plot course bearings using the normal charting tools - parallel ruler and dividers. You will need to purchase them for class. HAVE YOUR READING GLASSES or magnifiers available! Charts have small symbols and subtle color gradations that require good eyesight. You will need to have a printed copy of the Casco Bay Chart, any edition, in paper, waterproof paper, or in a chart pack. The year of publishing is not important, as we are focusing on learning to use a chart, creating bearings, and predicting hazards - not actually navigating in the real world.
Tides, moon phases, weather conditions, and other boating uses affecting the coastal waters will be discussed and you will learn how to predict where you should navigate your craft based on those hazards and conditions.
You will be given access to an online course that will serve as your handbook in advance. It is ideal for you to read the materials included in the online course before attending class. You will have access to it after the class meets.
If you are having difficulty with your work in this course, your instructor, Master Maine Guide Alice will work with you to fix the problems.
